Halloween campus events preview
Guest post courtesy of IU Communications multimedia intern Milana Katic:
Halloween isn’t just about kids, costumes and candy. If you’re looking for some eerie entertainment this month, here are some arts events on campus that are sure to get you in the Halloween spirit.
At the IU Auditorium
– Dennis James Hosts Halloween, 7:30 p.m. Oct. 25 — Every Halloween season, world-renowned cinema organist Dennis James returns to his alma mater to accompany silent horror films. This year’s feature goes hand in hand with the IU Cinema, as James will be accompanying the classic “The Hands of Orlac,” the film that inspired “Mad Love” (appearing at the IU Cinema, below). Tickets range from $16 to $21 for adults and $8 to $16 for students and children.
At the Wells-Metz Theatre
– “M. Butterfly,” 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24, 25, 28, 29, 30 and 31, 2 and 7:30 p.m. Nov. 1 — While not exactly traditional Halloween fare, the play is filled with deception, lies and masked identities. Based on Puccini’s opera “Madama Butterfly,“ “M. Butterfly“ is the darker story of a French government official falling in love with a Chinese opera diva. Tickets range from $12 to $15.
At the IU Cinema
– “Godzilla,” 3 p.m. Oct. 18 — This is the film that launched a thousand remakes … or maybe just 28. Either way, this 60th-anniversary screening is a fairly frightening film for adults and kids alike. Tickets are $3 and free for children 12 and younger.
– “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre,” 11:59 p.m. Oct. 24, 9:30 p.m.
Oct. 25 — The classic slasher movie celebrates its 40th anniversary this year with a reissued version of the film that’s sure to get under your skin (pun certainly intended). Tickets are $3.
– “Ghostbusters,” 3 p.m. Oct. 25 — Who you gonna call? Revisit this ghoulish classic, as well as its soundtrack, as the comedic relief for your scary schedule this Halloween season. Tickets are $3 and free for children 12 and younger.
– “Frankenstein,“ National Theatre Live, 6:30 p.m. Oct. 26 — Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller play alternating roles as Victor Frankenstein and his creation in Danny Boyle’s on-stage adaptation of the gothic literary classic. Tickets are $15 for the public, $12 for students.
– “Blacula,” 9:30 p.m. Oct. 31 — As one of the best-known Blaxploitation films of the 1970s, “Blacula“ brings the terror of Dracula to the streets of urban Los Angeles. The screening is free, but tickets are required.
– “Mad Love” and “The Raven” double feature, 3 p.m. Nov. 1 — “Mad Love“ is the 1935 remake of “The Hands of Orlac,” and “The Raven“ is the story of a sinister, Poe-obsessed doctor. Both are sure to give some classic Hollywood horror thrills and chills. The screening is free, but tickets are required.
At the Mathers Museum
– Halloween Family Fun Fest—Monsters, 2-4 p.m. Oct. 26 – Take a look at monsters from around the world, and make some spooky crafts with the family. The event is free and open to the public.
– Dia de los Muertos Community Altar Closing Reception, 5:30-8 p.m.
Nov. 1 – Celebrate the traditional Mexican holiday of “The Day of the Dead,” by honoring deceased loved ones at the Bloomington Community Altar, put into place by local artists Rachel Digregorio and Michael Redmond. The event is free and open to the public.
