Start spreading the news – Four IU students travel to New York for show tune extravaganza

On Aug. 21, four Indiana University student performers will travel to New York City to participate in the Sixth Annual Carner and Gregor Barely Legal Show-Tune Extravaganza.

The show at the New York supper club 54 Below will consist of 11 of the best up-and-coming musical theater performers, as selected by a panel of Broadway judges based on contestant video submissions. The show gives this talented group of college students a chance to make their New York concert debut while also learning valuable lessons in musical theatre from various professional workshops led by the Carner and Gregor musical theater team.

Lyricist Sam Carner and composer Derek Gregor actually have some Bloomington ties themselves, as their musical “Island Song” was held as a workshop performance at Indiana Festival Theatre last summer and was most recently produced at the Bloomington Playwrights Project in February. These performances introduced them to the various musical talents that IU has to offer, and even led them to previously invite senior Emily Schultheis to perform at one of their New York concerts in April (watch her performance above).

In addition to Schultheis, the IU students who have been selected to participate in the concert are juniors Kayla Eilers and Mia Fitzgibbon, and senior Nat Zegree. Break a leg, Hoosiers!

Carner and Gregor are also hosting a crowd funding campaign to cover production cost and help subsidize contestant travel and housing. For more information, visit their Indiegogo campaign.
