Newsroom’s new multimedia project highlights impact of IU Cinema

When IU Cinema opened its doors in January 2011, I was a student at IU Bloomington, barely interested in watching films that didn’t involve an A-list celebrity cast. Thankfully, my taste in movies has matured, and I was lucky enough to be the IU Cinema beat reporter for the Indiana Daily Student during my senior year as a journalism student.
The experience led to one-on-one interviews with “Ai Weiwei” director Alison Klayman and actor-activist Esai Morales, and, ultimately, to a greater recognition of how IU Cinema has contributed to my appreciation of film.
I know for a fact my IU Newsroom colleague Bethany Nolan shares my love for IU Cinema, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that we wanted to base our second Creatavist project on the cinema’s contributions to the Bloomington campus. In September, Bethany and I published a multimedia presentation about the World War II battleship USS Indiana, and how its prow made it to IU’s Memorial Stadium.
Using Creatavist’s new web format, our current project demonstrates how IU Cinema director Jon Vickers and his staff have made the cinema the rich resource for film on campus that it is today.

Since its groundbreaking in fall 2009, the IU Cinema has drawn in well-known filmmakers such as Werner Herzog, Nicolas Winding Refn, Glenn Close and Meryl Streep, who will receive an honorary doctoral degree during a campus visit in April.
The cinema also partners with academic units on campus, including the IU Libraries Film Archive, the Kinsey Institute and the Black Film Center/Archive, to name a few. Combined with the IU’s new Media School and the faculty addition of actor and director Robby Benson to the Department of Telecommunications, I can imagine IU Cinema has played a big role in making the university a place to study and see film.
