IU African American Arts Institute’s annual concert this weekend

My colleagues Jaclyn Lansbery and April Toler wrote an awesome story for Inside IU Bloomington about the upcoming Potpourri of the Arts concert, which includes performances by three ensembles within the African American Arts Institute — the African American Dance Company, the African American Choral Ensemble and the IU Soul Revue. Meanwhile, the above video appeared in this week’s edition of Inside IU.

The concert’s theme this year is “Shades of Blackness, Expressions of a Diaspora,” highlighting the 20th anniversary of the annual event and illustrating the diverse offerings of creativity seen throughout the diaspora.

A Potpourri of Arts in the African American Tradition” begins at 8 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater in downtown Bloomington. Tickets are available through the theater box office.

To me, the beauty of these performances is embodied by what senior Peyton Conners, who is part of IU Soul Revue, told Inside IUB:

“We get on stage and things become impromptu. We always do what we’re supposed to do, but one thing about music is that it can change your mood. It can change what you’re thinking and what you’re feeling.”
