The 2013 Kinsey Institute Juried Art Show opens Friday, kicking off a weekend of events that includes a show-and-tell with the artists, a cabaret burlesque show, after-parties and a movie screening.
The art, displayed throughout the Grunwald Gallery of Art at Indiana University Bloomington, is a mixed media ensemble that addresses issues of sex, sexuality, gender identity and expression, sexual health, politics of sex and gender, and the human body.
Artists from across the U.S., Canada, France, Germany, the U.K. and Hong Kong submitted a record 924 artworks, with jurors selecting 94 for the show, now in its eighth year. The contemporary works include paintings, prints, ceramics, wearable art, metalwork, sculpture, fiber art and video installations.
The opening reception, which will be attended by many of the artists, is from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Grunwald Gallery, 1201 E. 7th Seventh St. Visitors can vote for “Gallery Visitors Choice” award, for which the artist will receive $200. A $300 cash prize also will be given for “Best in Show.” The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be provided.
Organizers collaborated with local businesses and tourism leaders to provide a slate of weekend activities on and off-campus.
