Film and music collide with ‘Double Exposure’ collaboration
Love original film? Crazy for new music? Then be sure to check out “Double Exposure,” an annual project that pairs composition students from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music with IU film students.
Ten students created original films as part of the project, which will screen at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, March 3, at IU Cinema. The project also features film scores written by student composers, which will be performed by a live ensemble as part of Sunday’s premiere.
Typically, a composer writes a score after a film is edited. But here, filmmaker and composer functioned as a team from the beginning, according to Susanne Schwibs — a lecturer in the university’s Department of Communication and Culture, which is part of the College of Arts and Sciences — who worked with students on the interdisciplinary project.
Students met together throughout various stages of the production, including reviewing footage together, discussing stylistic preferences and rehearsing timing, sharing their understanding of film language and musical language in a true collaboration, she said. Assistant composition professor John Gibson and Nick Cline with the Student Composer Association helped guide student composers.
Students from the Department of Recording Arts within the Jacobs School of Music also took part in this year’s project, Schwibs said. Matched with student-composer teams, the recording arts students did the sound design, recording and mixing of the score under the guidance of professor Konrad Strauss and assistant professor Mark Hood.
The above trailer is for a short experimental film by Javier Ramirez, doctoral student in the Department of Communication and Culture, with music by Nick Cline, masters student in composition at the Jacobs School of Music. The film uses the technique of contact printing, which exposes footage repeatedly in the darkroom. A full list of the projects is available online.
The film screening is free but ticketed. Tickets can be obtained at the IU Auditorium Box Office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; one hour before any screening at the cinema; or by phone at 812-855-1103 for a $10 service fee per order.
