IU orchestra takes on Queen, wins the Internet

Have you seen this amazing video of the IU Ad Hoc Orchestra playing Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” yet? If not, take a few minutes and watch.

It’s drawing some major attention, with more than 30,000 views on YouTube and a mention on MSN’s website as an “awesome tip of the hat to the iconic original.”

Jacobs School of Music graduate student Nick Hersh both arranged and conducted the piece as an encore for a recent concert. He intentionally kept the music a secret from a majority of the musicians until the day of the piece, he told Inside IU Bloomington, and apparently managed to surprise the audience as well.

Hersh said he’s not yet sure what tune he’ll work on next. But he said he loves arranging orchestral works and will “take on almost any challenge — just no Justin Bieber, please!”
