IU senior ‘can’t imagine life’ without Ladies First

The reactions to Ladies First performances get Melissa Beringer every time.

She joined Indiana University’s all-female a cappella group during her freshman year, seeking a creative outlet for her love of music and vocal performance. Now a senior, she said she “can’t imagine life without Ladies First.”

And while she’ll cherish her experiences with the group and the lifelong relationships she’s made, Beringer said it’s the sentiments shared by those in the audience that are the most meaningful.

“Last year, we performed at the Soup Bowl benefit for Hoosier Hills Food Bank,” she said. “And afterwards, this woman came up to me and was talking about how much she’d enjoyed the show, and that her son was there too. She said he’d recently lost a friend, and that she knew our songs really uplifted him because she hadn’t seen him smile like that in a long time. It’s the moments like that that really make it worth it.”

Ladies First will perform its fall show at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at Willkie Auditorium. The group will cover such artists as Fun, Maroon 5, Lady Antebellum, Rihanna, Frank Ocean and Marvin Gaye. Tickets are $5, and can be purchased from any member or by contacting Ladies First via Facebook or Twitter.
