Fall has arrived, and is brimming with art
When the tent sales featuring mattresses and cheap furniture pop up on vacant lots and the streets are clogged with moving trucks, I know it is official: The students have returned.
Classes in Bloomington start Monday, and campus is already starting to hum.
There are plenty of great arts happenings on tap this fall, so thought I’d share a brief round-up:
- IU Cinema. The fall line-up includes visits from Werner Herzog, Todd Solondz and Walter Salles, as well as series on Cuban art and film, mumblecore and Tibetan New Wave cinema.
- IU Theatre. The fall season includes an updated “Richard III” complete with a motorcycle gang; “When the Rain Stops Falling,” where the behind-the-scenes wizards will make it rain on stage; and “Sunday in the Park with George,” inspired by the famous Seurat painting.
- IU Auditorium. I’ve already got tickets to see Yo-Yo Ma, and I’ve got my eye on “Rock of Ages” and Bill Maher. Tickets for Green Day’s “American Idiot” are on sale now.
- IU Opera and Ballet Theater. The season kicks off with Don Giovanni and I’m particularly interested in Philip Glass’ “Akhnaten,” having just read more about the unusual Egyptian pharaoh. The fall ballet, “Light and Shade,” features choreography by Twyla Tharp and Martha Graham.
- The Grunwald Gallery of Art. There are several interesting exhibitions this fall, including “Axe of Vengeance,” which delves into the film culture and posters of Ghana in the 1980s and 1990s, and “Samenwerken,” a collaborative exhibition that will be created on site.
- IU Art Museum. The museum’s “Fall for Art” season includes a retrospective of retired professor Barry Gealt’s work, a look at the museum’s German Expressionist holdings and an exhibition of beautifully decorated baby carriers from China.
- IU Libraries. The library just unveiled a digitized collection of educational films from the 1940s to the 1980s, while the folks at the Lilly Library created a fantastic digital collection about the War of 1812.
Not on the Bloomington campus? Check out a new outdoor sculpture by IUPUI Herron School of Art and Design junior Jamie Dickerson at the Indiana State Fair or pick up a virtual copy of “Posters of the New Deal” or “The New Deal in Photographs.” Written by IU East professors Edwina Helton and Jeffrey Jones, the books are now available for iPad.
